How Many Blueberries Do You Need for a Pie?

A 9-inch double-crust pie takes about 6 cups — roughly 600 berries, or two pounds. Here is how that scales with dish size.
A standard 9-inch double-crust blueberry pie needs 6 cups of blueberries — about 2 pounds, 900 g, or roughly 600 individual berries. That is the answer for the most common case.
Dish size changes it more than people expect, because a pie dish is closer to a cone than a cylinder and volume scales with the square of the radius.
By dish size
| Dish | Blueberries | Weight | Approx. berries |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8-inch | 4.5 cups | 1.5 lb / 670 g | ~445 |
| 9-inch standard | 6 cups | 2 lb / 900 g | ~594 |
| 9-inch deep dish | 7.5 cups | 2.5 lb / 1.1 kg | ~740 |
| 10-inch | 8 cups | 2.7 lb / 1.2 kg | ~790 |
| 9x13 slab | 10 cups | 3.3 lb / 1.5 kg | ~990 |
For a dish that is not on this list, the pie dish calculator works from your actual diameter and depth.
Why you should mound the filling
Blueberries lose roughly 20% of their volume during baking as cells rupture and water escapes. A filling packed flush with the rim will bake down into a visible gap under the top crust.
This is why nearly every good pie recipe tells you to mound the fruit slightly in the center. You are pre-compensating for shrinkage, not overfilling.
The number that actually determines whether your pie sets is thickener per cup of fruit. For blueberries, use about 2 teaspoons of cornstarch per cup — so 1/4 cup of cornstarch for a 6-cup pie. Frozen berries need one extra tablespoon overall.
Buying quantities
Supermarket blueberries usually come in pint (about 2 cups) or 18-oz clamshells (about 3.5 cups). For a standard 9-inch pie you need three pints or two 18-oz containers.
Buy slightly more than the recipe requires. Some berries will be soft or stemmed, and a pie is not a good place to discover you are a half cup short.
Crust style changes the number
- Double crust: the baseline figures above.
- Lattice top: the same amount of fruit, but expect more evaporation through the gaps and a slightly firmer set.
- Crumb top: about 10% less fruit, since the topping takes up headroom. See blueberry crumb pie.
- Open-faced or galette: roughly half. A galette uses about 3 cups.
Cost
At typical supermarket prices, two pounds of fresh blueberries runs meaningfully more than the rest of the pie combined. Frozen fruit cuts that substantially and works well here — add the extra cornstarch and expect about 10 minutes more in the oven. The cost per berry calculator will price it out from whatever your store charges.
